NEW MEXICO'S GOVERNOR GARY JOHNSON HAS DECLARED APRIL, 2000, AS THE MONTH OF THE LIBRARY FOR OUR STATE.  APRIL 9th - 15th IS NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK. THE ENTIRE MONTH OF APRIL IS ALSO DESIGNATED AS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH.  IN HONOR OF ALL OF THE ABOVE, THE MORIARTY COMMUNITY LIBRARY HAS ADDED SEVERAL POETRY BOOKS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO ITS COLLECTION.  IN ADDITION, A LOCAL PATRON, MRS. MARIA McPHERSON,  HAS SUBMITTED SOME OF HER OWN ORIGINAL POETRY FOR THE PUBLIC'S PERUSAL AND ENJOYMENT.  FOLLOWING ARE SOME SELECTIONS OF MRS. McPHERSON'S POETRY:

YOUR WALK

IT EXCITES ME TO SEE YOU WALK.
THE WAY YOU SET YOUR FEET
AS IF THE GROUND WAS SOMETHING
TO BE EXPLORED.
THE WAY YOU HOLD YOUR HEAD,
AS IF THERE WAS
SOME DISTANT MUSIC
TO BE HEARD.
THE HOT ASPHALT OF THE CITY
TURNS INTO A QUIET PATH
THROUGH COMPLACENT FOREST
WHEN YOU WALK.

AND IT EXCITES ME.

KEEP WALKING TOWARDS ME.

WINDMILL

WINDMILL SILVER AGAINST AZURE SKY
BROWN IS THE EARTH,
THE WEST, WHERE WOULD IT BE
WITHOUT THE LIFE-GIVING, LIFE-SUSTAINING WHIRR OF THE MILL,
WITHOUT THE CONSTANT TURNING OF THE BLADES?

THERE IS REASSURANCE IN THE PULSATING SOUND,
KNOWLEDGE OF THE BREATH OF LIFE,
GIVING HOPE TO THIRSTING GROUND.

WINDMILL BLACK AGAINST ORANGE SKY;
SUN IS SETTING.
AND NOW THE WHIRRING CEASED.
THE QUIETNESS OF HAVING DONE WELL
LIES IN THE DARK BLADES.
THE WIND HAS GONE TO ITS DESERVED REST.

TRANQUILITY ENTERS MY HEART,
SERENITY AND PIOUS HOPE,
SOOTHING MY TURNING AND SPIRALING MIND
FROM THE EXHAUSTING RUN OF THE DAY.

WE ARE AT PEACE,
THE WINDMILL AND I.

TECHNOLOGY FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW is a project initiated by a team comprised of the Moriarty Community Library, Moriarty Drug-Free Tres Program, and Presbyterian Medical Services/Torrance County Head Start Program.  This project is geared towards providing the community with training in computer technology, free of charge.

LEARNING IS FUN! is a project involving a team made up of the Moriarty Community Library, the Moriarty Historical Museum, and Presbyterian Medical Services/Torrance County Head Start Program. This project addresses Family Literacy in its broadest sense, including Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language, family oriented activities, and community activities.

CUENTOS DE ABUELITOS is a project in which the Library, the Moriarty Historical Museum, Head Start, Main Street, and the Route 66 Organization are currently involved.  This is an oral histories project, and will result in a video featuring interviews of community elders of long standing, music, poetry, and footage of festivals and other community events. Anyone having input and/or suggestions is encouraged to contact Susie at the Moriarty Historical Museum, at (505)832.4087, or Valeri at the Moriarty Community Library, at (505)832.2513.

The MORIARTY COMMUNITY LIBRARY was established in the small club house of the Moriarty Extension Club,in 1975. At that time, the Library was open two afternoons per week, for a total of eight hours. In those idyllic days, all the Library help was done on a volunteer basis, and ladies would gather in the Library every Thursday afternoon and play cards, and check out romance novels.
In 1987, the City of Moriarty enlarged the Community Center Building and due largely to the efforts of City Council Member Charles Morrison, the Library was moved to that location. Mrs. Wanda Tritt became the Head Librarian.  In 1996, Valeri McElligott became the Head Librarian. The Library is now open 48 hours per week.
The Moriarty Community Library is still located in the Community Center Building in a room consisting of a little over 900 square feet.  We do a lot with a little space; there are over ten thousand volumes of material, including books on tape and videos.  The Library has all the usual genres: classics and literature, fiction, (still some romance novels),non-fiction and reference,  science fiction, fantasy, horror, western, young adult fiction and informational books, and easy readers and picture books for the very young.  In addition, Moriarty Community Library boasts an excellent and growing collection of Southwestern materials.  Thanks to grants from the USWest Foundation and the Bill Gates Foundation Library Initiative, there are six computers available at no charge to the public, all with Internet access.
The Moriarty Community Library is recognized by the City of Moriarty as an official Tourist Information Center, and has materials for sale and distribution available to travelers.
